Ants are known as very small insects and are often encountered around us. Ants are social insects and colonize very much. Each colony consisted of a caste of queens, soldiers and workers.
Do you know how ants can find food around them? Although small, ants are insects that are quite smart in doing many things. This is done solely to preserve their lives. If an ant colony finds a food source, the colony will think of ways to reach that place quickly. When the colony sends worker ants out to forage for food, they can walk quite a distance on their way out of the nest. Worker ants do not have a 'pattern' when they are walking in search of food sources. In contrast, ants find food by walking randomly or without a pattern. Ants tend to choose a path with a soft surface, but if the road is too far, then a hard road can be used as a shortcut for them.
During their journey they will leave trails or chemicals called pheromones to help them find their way back to their homes. Once the food source has been found, the worker ants will release more pheromones which serve as a signal or message to the rest of the colony that the food source has been found. Then other ants will come out of the nest, and begin to follow the pheromone trail by using their antennae to get to the food source and together carry the food back to the nest.
So, what if these ant colonies lose track of pheromones? It is certain that the ant colonies that have been looking for food will be very difficult to find directions to the nest because the pheromones left by the ants have disappeared. Although they do not transmit disease to humans, ants should be controlled.
