# The Complete Guide to Termite Control for Homes and Buildings

Termites destroy timber, ceilings, and documents unseen until the damage is severe. This guide explains termite types, signs of infestation, professional control methods, cost factors, and prevention for homes and commercial buildings.

## Why termites are dangerous

Termites work from the inside out — a colony can eat through timber for months before the damage shows on the surface. In Indonesia's warm, humid tropical climate, termite colonies stay active all year, so the risk to buildings is far higher than in temperate regions.

Beyond roof frames, door frames, and furniture, termites also attack documents, books, and packaging. Early treatment is far cheaper than repairing structures that have already been hollowed out.

## Common termite types in Indonesia

Identifying the termite type determines the right treatment method. The three groups found most often are:

- Subterranean termites — live in the soil and attack buildings from below through mud tubes; the most destructive in Indonesia.
- Drywood termites — nest directly in dry timber such as frames, furniture, and roof trusses with no soil contact.
- Dampwood termites — attack damp timber near water sources, leaks, and areas that never fully dry.

## Signs of a termite infestation

The sooner the signs are spotted, the smaller the damage. Check regularly for:

- Mud tubes on walls, foundations, and columns used by subterranean termites.
- Timber that sounds hollow when tapped and crumbles easily.
- Piles of swarmer wings on the floor near windows after the rainy season.
- Fine, sand-like frass pellets under furniture — a sign of drywood termites.

## Professional termite control methods

Effective termite control targets the whole colony, not just the termites you can see. Two main approaches, often combined after an inspection:

- Soil treatment — termiticide is injected into the soil around and beneath the building to create a barrier against subterranean termites.
- Baiting systems — bait is placed at active points; worker termites carry it back to the nest so the whole colony is affected.
- Pre- vs post-construction — new builds are protected with soil treatment before the slab is poured; standing buildings are handled with targeted injection and baiting.

## Factors that affect termite control cost

Termite control cost is not one-size-fits-all because it depends on site conditions. The final price is set after a free survey, but the main factors are:

- The area size and the number of floors to protect.
- The severity and spread of the infestation (localized or widespread).
- The chosen method — injection, baiting, or a combination.
- The contract type: one-off treatment vs a warrantied program with periodic visits.

## How to prevent termites

Prevention extends the protection period and lowers long-term cost:

- Keep timber, cardboard, and paper stacks away from direct soil contact.
- Fix leaks and keep areas ventilated so they do not stay damp.
- Carry out periodic inspections, especially after the swarming season.

## Frequently asked questions

Can't find your answer? Contact our Customer Care at (021) 560 6688 or customercare@etos.co.id.

How long does termite protection last?

Depending on the method and soil conditions, soil-injection protection generally lasts several years. ETOS's warrantied program includes scheduled re-visits so protection stays active throughout the contract period.

Is termite treatment safe for occupants?

Yes. ETOS uses officially registered materials with measured dosage and safe placement, following Integrated Pest Management principles to stay safe for occupants and pets.

Is soil injection or baiting better?

Both are effective for different situations and are often combined. Soil injection barriers protect the structure from subterranean termites, while baiting targets and eliminates the colony. A technician determines the best choice after an inspection.

How much does termite control cost?

The cost is set after a free site survey and depends on the area size, infestation level, and method. See the pricing page for the cost models and the factors involved.
