Rats can carry various dangerous diseases, one of which is Hantavirus. This virus can cause serious health problems that affect the human respiratory system and kidneys. Between 2024 and 2026, the Indonesian Ministry of Health recorded a total of 23 cases of hantavirus in Indonesia, with 3 deaths. So what is Hantavirus? Hantavirus is a group of viruses spread primarily by rodents (mice). Humans can become infected through contact with the urine, feces, or saliva of infected rats. Transmission most commonly occurs through aerosolization, when dry rat feces particles become airborne and are inhaled by humans while in the area or cleaning a dirty area. The initial symptoms of hantavirus often resemble those of the flu (influenza), so sufferers often experience delays in recognizing the infection. These symptoms include high fever, headache, muscle pain (especially in the back and thighs), nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
